A Fargo deck sits under snow for months, soaks in the spring thaw and then bakes in summer sun. That is why stain usually does better than paint on the boards you walk on. We wash the deck, let it dry, sand where needed and apply the finish in thin coats.
A deck in Fargo spends months under snow. In spring the snow melts into the boards, and by July the same boards are dry and hot in full sun. No finish has an easy life on a surface like that. On the boards you walk on, a penetrating stain usually does better than paint, because it soaks into the wood and wears away slowly. Paint forms a skin, and when water gets under that skin it peels. We explain both options at the estimate.
Good results depend on the wood being clean and dry. We wash off dirt, mildew and gray fibers, and strip old finish that is failing. Then the deck has to dry, which can take a few clear days. Rough or raised boards are sanded. Loose fasteners are set, and we point out any soft or split boards so you can decide about replacing them. Stain goes on in thin coats, worked into the boards, ends and railings, with no puddles left on top.
Timing matters more here than in milder places. The deck has to be dry from the thaw, and the finish needs mild, dry days and nights to cure, so most deck work falls between late spring and early fall. New pressure treated lumber also needs time to dry out before it will take stain. Note that the City of Fargo requires a permit for projects involving a deck or stairs, so if any structure is being rebuilt, check with the Inspections department before that part begins.

Deck painting & staining in Fargo: common questions
Should I stain or paint my deck?

For floor boards we usually suggest stain. It soaks in and fades instead of peeling. Paint can work on railings and trim. A deck that is already painted normally stays painted unless it is fully stripped.
How soon after the snow melts can a deck be stained?
Once the wood has dried through, not just on top. In Fargo that is usually well into spring. We check the boards before we commit to a day.
How often will my deck need doing again?
It depends on sun, foot traffic and the type of stain. Clear and light finishes need renewing sooner than solid ones, and south facing decks wear fastest. We tell you what to watch for.
