Paint or Replace? Siding, Trim, Cabinets and Decks in Fargo

When to paint and when to replace siding, trim, cabinets and decks in Fargo: rot, chalky aluminum, old wood siding and worn deck boards, with national costs.

Paint or Replace? Siding, Trim, Cabinets and Decks in Fargo

Paint protects sound material. It does not fix rotten wood, loose boards or failed siding. This page helps you tell which one you have, with the Fargo freeze and thaw cycle in mind.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Local labor, paint prices and the condition of your own surfaces move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

Should I paint or replace my kitchen cabinets?

Paint them if the boxes are solid, the doors are flat and you like the layout. Replace them if the boxes are swollen from water, the shelves sag or the layout does not work. By the national figures, painting costs $2,000 to $6,500 and full replacement costs $4,500 to $15,000.

Is it cheaper to paint or replace old siding?

It is cheaper to paint siding than to replace it, as long as the siding is sound. HomeGuide lists painting vinyl at $1,500 to $5,000 against $4,800 to $11,100 to replace it. For aluminum it is $1,500 to $7,000 to paint against $6,300 to $20,100 to replace.

No such comparison is published for wood, stucco or brick. Paint is only the cheaper choice if it will last. Paint over rotten or loose siding fails fast, and then you pay twice.

My wood siding is 30 years old, faded and cracked. Paint or replace?

Paint it if the boards are still firm. Faded paint and fine surface cracks on wood siding are normal wear and can be fixed with prep and primer. Replace boards that are soft, cupped, split through or loose.

Push a screwdriver into the bottom edges and the ends of the boards. Firm wood can be painted. Hardboard siding, common on Fargo homes from the 1970s and 1980s, swells and flakes at the bottom edge once water gets in. Swollen hardboard does not go back, so those pieces need replacing.

My wood siding has some rot. Do I paint it or replace it first?

Replace the rotted boards first, then paint. Paint will not stop rot. It hides it for a season while the damage spreads behind the film.

Find out why the wood got wet as well. The usual causes here are a missing gutter, snow piled against the wall, a sprinkler, or open joints at windows. In Fargo, siding work needs a permit from the city's Inspections department, so ask before boards are replaced.

The trim is rotting or soft. Fill and paint, or new trim?

Small soft spots in trim can be dug out, hardened, filled and painted. Trim that is soft along its length or all the way through should be replaced. Window sills, the bottoms of door casings and the ends of fascia boards rot first.

Can a painter patch dry rot with epoxy or do I need a carpenter?

A painter can patch small areas of rot with a two-part epoxy filler, once the soft wood is removed and the rest is dry. A carpenter is needed when the rot is in something structural, covers a large area or reaches a window frame or sill plate.

Epoxy repairs last when the wood around them is dry and sound. We tell you which repairs we will make ourselves and which need a carpenter before paint.

My deck boards are grey and splintering. Stain or replace?

Grey boards can be cleaned and stained. Splintering, cupped or soft boards should be replaced. Grey is only sun damage on the surface, and a wash and a light sanding bring back clean wood.

Check the frame as well. If the joists and posts are firm, replacing the worst boards and staining the rest is good value. If the frame is soft, stain is wasted money.

My aluminum siding is chalky. Paint it or cover it?

Paint it. Chalky aluminum siding takes paint well once the chalk is washed off, and the metal underneath usually has decades of life left. The chalk is the old factory finish breaking down in the sun.

Rub your hand on the siding. If it comes away white, the wall needs a thorough wash before any primer or paint. Dents stay visible after painting, so badly dented walls are the one case where covering or replacing makes more sense. Older steel siding around Fargo chalks the same way and is treated the same way.

Is a 20-year-old deck worth painting or staining?

A 20-year-old deck is worth staining if the frame is sound and most boards are firm. It is not worth it if the posts are rotting or the boards flex and crack underfoot.

Fargo winters are hard on decks. Snow sits on the boards for months and the spring thaw soaks them. On an old deck, a solid stain hides weathered wood better than a clear or semi-transparent one. See our deck and fence guide for more.

This was my first time trying out this company, and they made everything seamless. I called them to come over to trim up some molding in my house and then paint the baseboards. The owner came he gave me a really fair quote, promised to show up right on time, and did a great job at what he quoted.
